{"id":5826,"date":"2017-07-12T09:09:59","date_gmt":"2017-07-12T07:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lotusregister.co.za\/?p=5826"},"modified":"2017-07-12T09:11:45","modified_gmt":"2017-07-12T07:11:45","slug":"mazda-pioneers-sparkless-ultra-high-compression-petrol-engine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/old2018.lotusregister.co.za\/?p=5826","title":{"rendered":"Mazda pioneers sparkless ultra-high compression petrol engine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>New tech claimed to boost fuel efficiency by 30 per cent; likely to debut in all-new 2018 Mazda3<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lotusregister.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Mazda-HCCI.jpg\" width=\"484\" height=\"323\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mazda will introduce a pioneering new engine next year that\u2019s claimed to return 30 per cent better fuel consumption by combusting petrol without a spark plug, using ultra-high compression.<\/p>\n<p>According to Japanese news site\u00a0Nikkei.com,\u00a0the new technology will be a world first when it\u2019s introduced towards the end of 2018 \u2014 most likely in the next-generation\u00a0Mazda3.<\/p>\n<div id=\"teads-video-container\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mm.carsales.com.au\/carsales\/adclick\/FCID=-4\/SITE=mt.motoring\/AREA=editorials_details\/atype=news\/certified=\/sec=\/car=Mazda\/ltype=\/kw=\/cat=\/tile=7\/SIZE=550x309\/RANDOM=16099934\/VIEWID=34738822\" target=\"_top\"><img src=\"http:\/\/content.aimatch.com\/default.gif\" alt=\"\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><!--more--><\/div>\n<p>The new tech, called Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), sees the fuel-air mix subjected to pressures well beyond current petrol engine technology.<\/p>\n<p>Mazda\u2019s SKYACTIV-G petrol engine already has a high \u2014 for a petrol engine \u2014 14:1 compression ratio but the new range of engines are thought to come with a stratospheric 18:1 ratio.<\/p>\n<p>The pressures involved during combustion are so high in the HCCI engine that spark plugs are not needed to trigger a combustion.<\/p>\n<p>In the past other car-makers have experimented with HCCI but have struggled with issues of premature combustion and controlling the burn of petrol to ensure there is no \u2018spike\u2019 in emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Managing heat and the rate of combustion at high revs has also proven huge problems in the past.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not known how Mazda\u2019s new engine manages the combustion over an entire engine range while complying with emission regulations, but the claim that it has achieved a 30 per cent boost in efficiency while reducing exhaust emissions could prove yet another blow for the diesel engine.<\/p>\n<p>As well as the new HCCI engine, Nikkei reports that the Japanese car-maker has developed a new pure-electric vehicle that it plans to begin mass-producing in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Following the new pure-EV, Mazda will also launch its next-generation plug-in hybrid technology in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not yet known how this will differ from existing tech used by other car-makers.<\/p>\n<p>Mazda is expected to continue offering conventionally powered vehicles until at least 2030.<\/p>\n<p>Article Courtesy\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.motoring.com.au\">www.motoring.com.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New tech claimed to boost fuel efficiency by 30 per cent; likely to debut in all-new 2018 Mazda3 Mazda will introduce a pioneering new engine next year that\u2019s claimed to return 30 per cent better fuel consumption by combusting petrol without a spark plug, using ultra-high compression.
